Ever heard of Joe Gilliam? Probably not. Gilliam was the initial catalyst at quarterback in 1974 who first ignited the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl winning ways. He was the first African-American quarterback to open a season as a starter. After posting a 6-0 preseason record followed by a 4-1-1 regular season Gilliam was benched in favor of Terry Bradshaw. Why? Watch and find out.

Quick question for anyone reading this and might know the answer. It was 1979-80 when I was visiting my girlfriend in Hallendale, FL. She lived right across from a park, and one night there was a Semi-Pro football game. I was told that Joe Gilliam was the QB. The QB of that team was wearing #17 and boy could that QB throw the ball. Is it possible that it was really JOE? He was the best.... sorry about how things worked out for him and others. Thanks again for the GREAT ARTICLE.

I agree with you. I am ashamed of what happened to the African American & American Indian people. Joe was a great QB... I never knew the story, but after seeing this article/film, I now know the truth. I was 12 years old (1974) growing up in Hollywood, FL when I remember seeing Joe #17 at QB for the Steelers. His release was way better the TB. I am sorry the way things worked out, but for sure JG was the better QB. I will tell my 3 young boys the truth and how he helped pay the way.

you have got to be kidding me. the amount of racial taunts and death threats played a heavy roll in him turning to drugs. especially after being told you weren't good enough after taking your team 10-1-1. i get sick and tired of fn white people always trying to diminish the evil they set forth on society through their destructive white superiority complex. Joe gilliam's experience represents hundreds of black men before, during and after his time.

I have been able to find bits and pieces of Marlin Briscoe doing the dirty work at WR; blocking, catching the ball in traffic, etc. You could be effective in the redzone because of it, and also because he knew how to tippy toe along the back end line of the endzone. Obviously Briscoe could always be a threat to throw the ball on flea-flickers.
