If you've ever shot the AK and already know where to hold it's not hard to hit a man sized target with it at 400 yards. I don't think you know what you're saying, either that or you just can't shoot.

7.62x39 will penetrate soft body armor as will 5.56. You need plates to stop rifle rounds...period. A 1/2 inch ceramic plate should stop 7.62x51 as well. 3/4 inch ceramic plates will stop rounds up to..well, I'm not sure but it managed to stopped three 300 win mag rounds when we tested it out on deployment so that's something.

Well i know that haha. 7.62x51 is substantially larger than 7.62x39.

a 7.62 NATO (7.62x51) will though.
And body armor is a vague term: the standard issue and mostly available vests without plates etc will get pierced by most assault/high power rifle rounds

Problem with your analysis, is that AK-47 shoots a russian made 7.62 x39. USSR nor Russia shoot NATO rounds obviously...
so much for the alleged "copycat" shooting 7.62x39

With any fire arm, if you don't shut the brain or nervous system down you wont stop a motivated enemy. Just like the Army going from the 38 back to the colt 45 and did nothing for them in the Philippines.
